Get a Year of Stories

For the last few months, I’ve been giving everyone who subscribes to my mailing list, four free ebooks – Bottled Lightning, Saviour, Curfew and Only Friends. The stories are a starter library of sorts and serve as a good introduction to my writing. This year, I wanted to go a bit further so I’m launching A Year of Stories. Every month I’m going to send my newsletter subscribers a short story. It might be something completely new, it might be an older story that’s not available any more or it might be something a little bit “different”. There’ll be a range of genres as well – I write anything from science fiction to urban fantasy to Lovecraftian horror and the monthly stories will span the whole range. The stories will go out at the end of every month and the first will be arriving in inboxes this weekend. Of course, everyone who subscribes will still get the four ebooks. All you have to do to sign up is CLICK HERE and enter your email address in the box. Easy. [Get a Year of Stories by Philip Harris first appeared on Solitary Mindset on 26th January 2016]

I’m just dragging myself back to the real world after my trip to the Horror Writers Retreat at the Stanley Hotel in Colorado and I’ll be posting some thoughts tomorrow but in the meantime, I have a few free books to give away. My next story, Phantom Pain, will be appearing in the anthology – UnCommon Bodies and I have a few advance copies of the ebook to give away in return for a review. Here’s the description from the publisher: Step right up to the modern freakshow — We have mermaids, monsters, and more. You won’t be disappointed, but you may not get out alive. UnCommon Bodies presents a collection of 21 beautifully irreverent stories which blend the surreal and the mundane. Together, the authors explore the lives of the odd, the unbelievable, and the impossible. Imagine a world where magic exists, where the physical form has the power to heal or repulse, where a deal with the devil means losing so much more than your soul. Amidst the Settling Dust

It’s been a hectic few weeks since the launch of Glitch Mitchell and the Unseen Planet. My time’s been split between promoting the book, a busy period at my day job, renovations on our new apartment, a birthday (mine), and trying to get back to running after an extended period recovering from a niggling injury I’ve had for years. Time has been hurtling past at an alarming rate. I’m managing to write though – my streak is still going strong (839 days so far) and I’ve got several projects on the go at the moment. The bulk of my time has been spent on my zombie novel and it’s going extremely well. I’ve also been working with a very talented cover designer on a cover. I’m really pleased with how it’s turned out and it’s inspiring me to push even harder to make the book the best it can be. I’m aiming to release it early 2016, editors permitting. The edits on my Apocalypse Weird novel, Siren’s Call, came in this week and I’ll be working on those today. Not sure on the release date for that yet. And finally, I have a new short story coming out in a very cool anthology called UnCommon Bodies. My story … Read More

Out Now – Glitch Mitchell and the Deadly Follicle

Earlier in the month, The Leighgendarium posted an interview with me and as part of the feature I ran a giveaway for a free copy of Glitch Mitchell and the Unseen Planet. Entry to the giveaway involved inventing a cliffhanger involving Glitch that I would then use to write a new short story. I picked a winner at random and ended up with Glitch being trapped in Donald Trump’s hair! After some deliberation, I spent last Monday writing Glitch Mitchell and the Deadly Follicle and it was posted on The Leighgendarium on Friday. If you’d like to know how Glitch, Anderson and Doctor Zheng ended up in such a dire situation, and if they manage to escape – you can read the story here. It was a lot of fun to write, and hopefully as much fun to read. For a limited time you can pick up Glitch Mitchell and the Unseen Planet on all ebook platforms including Amazon US, Amazon UK, Amazon Canada, Kobo, Nook and iBooks for just 99c. The paperback edition is also as cheap as I can make it – $10.95. You can find out more about my upcoming releases, and get four FREE books by signing up for my newsletter here. Published Stories 2013 Edition

2013 was a very successful year as far as published stories goes. All told, eight of my stories were unleashed on an unsuspecting world… JANUARY Piece Number 7 – Garbled Transmissions My name is Max Gambino and I know the real story behind Gustav Lang. Not the sensationalist crap that gets printed in the rags but the actual, honest to goodness, sweat, blood and tears story of Gustav Lang and the music he created; the story that’s been buried under the controversy and the arrests and the trial and the Lang Act. Most of what people know about him is a lie, created by publicists trying to bolster sales and lawyers trying to protect their clients. Lang deserves better than that. Music can be wondrous. Lang is proof of that. MARCH The Many Deaths of Albert G Elderberry – Fast-Forward Festival Albert G Elderberry barely noticed the first time he died. He was hit by the black SUV that had accelerated towards him as he crossed the street on his way to the store. He was 68 and the impact shattered bones and tore open internal organs, leaving him dead in the road before the SUV reached the corner of the street. Night Man … Read More

Out Now – The Bone Boy

Well, it’s been a hectic few weeks with the marathon, the Vancouver Writers Festival, trips to see John Cleese and Craig Ferguson plus lots of day job work all crammed into a 3 week period. That’s the excuse I’m going to use for not realising that a) The Bones Anthology from James Ward Kirk Fiction was release and b) My story, The Bone Boy, won an Editors Choice award. I was very happy with The Bone Boy so it’s great to see it in print. You can pick up a copy of both the ebook and the print version from Amazon and at the moment the ebook is free. Not sure how long that will last. [Out Now – The Bone Boy by Philip Harris first appeared on Solitary Mindset on 2nd November 2013]

An Honourable Result

I found out on Wednesday that my story, Rainshine, received an honourable mention in the 3rd quarter round of the Writers of the Future Contest. Now, obviously that’s not a win. I don’t get to dress up in a fancy suit and go to an awards ceremony. It’s really just a rejection but it comes with a hearty “attaboy” and I’m not too proud to cling to it like a Browncoat clinging to a signed Joss Whedon script. When it comes to my writing, I take my encouragement any way I can. This is actually the second story I’ve entered that got an honourable mention. The first was Piece Number 7. Hanging with the Bone Boy

My love of horror started somewhere around 1989 with two books – Immortal Blood by Barbara Hambly (published as Those Who Hunt the Night outside of the UK) and Clive Barker’s Cabal. It was around the same time that my eventually-to-be-wife introduced me to horror films in the form of Hellraiser and I was hooked. I never really got into the hardcore horror scene but we’ve watched a lot of horror films over the years. So, when I started writing in 1992 (ouch), it was inevitable that I’d start with horror stories. The first, Almost Alone (currently unpublished and sitting in my “trunk” folder) was set in a hospital room with a malevolent creature living in the ceiling. I’m planning on revisiting the idea at some point. Since those early stories, I’ve dabbled in science fiction and fantasy but over half the stories I’ve written have been some form of horror tale. It’s been a couple of years since I wrote a full length horror story though, so getting back to horror with The Bone Boy has been fun – I’ve really been able to stretch my writing legs. I wrapped up the closing scene yesterday and at roughly 1,400 words it was … Read More

Out Now – Origami Man

My new fantasy story , Origami Man, is up at Hogglepot. This one started with the image of a man made out of newspaper talking to a newspaper boy. Initially it was going to be fairly lighthearted but it didn’t really turn out that way in the end. Despite the fact that I’m not running at the moment (that starts back up tomorrow morning), this week has been surprisingly busy – mostly with work. I did manage to scrape together a couple of writing sessions to finish off a new story – CAvE – and add just under two thousand words to The Ghost Smuggler. I’m now reaching the point where I’m doing more and more actual writing rather than just reworking content from the earlier drafts. I’ll still be bringing some stuff over but from here on it’s mostly new content hanging on the bones of the early draft. That means I need to be a lot more disciplined about sitting down and writing. My goal is to get the first draft of the rewrite complete by the end of August so that I can be ready to pitch it at the Surrey International Writers’ Conference in October. That’s the goal anyway. It’s a … Read More

I have a new story out called Happin3ss101.com. You can find it in the May issue of eHorror – available in all the popular ebook formats. That issue is currently on sale for $1.99 but I’m not sure how much longer that will last so grab it now while you can.
