Renanimated Writers Zombie Blog Crawl – A Zombie Top 5

Philip HarrisSerial Killer ZLeave a Comment

I’m a member of a very cool Facebook group for fans of zombie books – Reanimated Writers. A bunch of us have put together a series of zombie related blog posts and today it’s my turn. I thought I’d go with a quick rundown of my top five zombies from TV and film – presented in reverse order. 5 – R R is the hero in Warm Bodies, a fun, romantic comedy horror. Or horror romantic comedy. Or something. Anyway, R, finds himself drawn to a still living woman he saves from a zombie attack. As their relationship develops, R begins to regain his humanity, but like all young couples, the path to love is strewn with undead body parts. The film is actually based on the first of Isaac Marion’s Warm Bodies books. I haven’t read any of them, but I probably should. 4 – Oberst Herzog My wife and I saw Dead Snow as part of a horror film festival we attended during our honeymoon. It may even have been on the first night of our honeymoon. Make of that what you will. Where Warm Bodies is ultimately a feel good, cuddly zombie movie, Dead Snow is a classic, in your face, … Read More

Dead Eyes – A Serial Killer Z Excerpt

It’s almost Halloween so I thought I’d post an excerpt from my latest book, Serial Killer Z. It has zombies, knives, lots of blood, and a serial killer. Dead Eyes The dead man lunged across the road toward me, too-white teeth clacking as they chewed at imaginary flesh. Its eyes were sharklike black orbs, and they tracked me as I moved. Its right foot had been crushed and was dragging behind the zombie, slowing it down. Rancid breath laced with the smell of carrion and blood washed over my face and caught in my throat. Backing away, I swung my knife at the creature’s face. The blade swept across its forehead and sliced through the gray flesh. Thick black blood ran from the wound and spattered the ground at my feet. With its eyes locked on mine, the zombie took another lumbering step. My knife’s handle was slick with sweat. It felt like I was trying to hold on to a fish. One wrong move, and it might break free, leaving me defenseless. The zombie shuffled forward, clawed fingers grasping at my face. The air was thick with the smell of decay. I attacked with the knife again, an upward sweep … Read More

For some, the zombies are a good thing

It’s been a long time coming but I’m finally ready to announce my new horror series – Serial Killer Z. I’ve always had a soft spot for zombies. Return of the Living Dead is one of my favorite movies, and The Walking Dead is one of the few TV shows on my “must see” list. But other than a couple of very short stories, I’d always shied away from writing about them. Zombies are extraordinarily popular, but it’s hard to bring something new to the genre without losing the elements that make zombies so much fun. Even when the idea of throwing a serial killer into the zombie apocalypse came to me (in the gym of all places), I resisted. But the idea just wouldn’t let go. Pretty quickly that basic premise had grown into a series of books and, eventually, I gave in. I’m glad I did. It turns out writing about a serial killer and zombies is a lot of fun. I’m four books into the series so far, and I’m really enjoying putting my serial killer through hell. Of course, writing a book is only the first step in the journey to publication. It’s been three and a … Read More
