If you subscribe to my newsletter or follow me on Bluesky, you’ll know that a few weeks ago I was due to run a Bookbub promotion on the first Serial Killer Z book. Bookbub promos are a) very hard to get and b) very expensive. Which made it particularly annoying when technical difficulties at Amazon prevented me from discounting the book, meaning the promo automatically got cancelled, leaving me hundreds of dollars out of pocket.
To make things worse, rumour has it that the issues are caused by the overwhelming number of junk “AI” generated books currently bombarding Amazon. I don’t know if that’s actually true (Amazon support couldn’t tell me what the issue was), but whatever the cause, the impact for me is huge.
Faced with the option of abandoning the Bookbub promo and maybe not getting another one for years, I opted to rebook it for this weekend making my very expensive Bookbub promo a very very expensive Bookbub promo.
So, in an effort to recoup at least some of that cost as quickly as possible, I’ve discounted all three of the Serial Killer Z books from $4.99 to 99c/99p or whatever the equivalent is in your market.
I don’t normally discount the later books because it’s the sales of the second and third books at the regular price that actually generate the income to cover the cost of the promo. But for this one, I’d just like to get as many copies of the books sold as possible. That will increase the books’ visibility on Amazon, get some reviews and (fingers crossed) translate to more sales over time. We’ll see.
