Sunday Snippet – 26th November 2023

I wrote another something. Unlike the last time, this one is both the right length and fits the theme for the market it’s intended for.

It still needs more editing (and a proofreading pass) but here’s a sneak peak at the opening.

I’m always 27 when they come for me.

Nobody expects it to work. They’ve heard the urban legends, seen the films. Everyone knows it’s not real. Everyone knows you can’t just say someone’s name into a mirror three or five or seventeen times and expect them to materialize out of nowhere intent on turning you into a blood-soaked corpse.

Except you can.

And people do.

And that’s when they come for me.

I never see their faces, just feel rough hands clamping onto my wrists and ankles and throat. Then they drag me through the mirror. It never breaks. I just pass through it. But it feels like it’s broken. Jagged shards of shattered glass rake my skin, opening it up to expose dark muscle, scoring lines across glistening bone.

It’s excruciating.

It’s still less painful than what waits for me on the other side of the mirror.
