“I’m so empty”

Oh look, Garbage have a new album out. And it’s excellent.   Empty is the first single from Strange Little Birds. I’ve been listening to the album a lot for the last few days and I really like it. No sign of a Vancouver stop on the tour yet, but I’m keeping my fingers crossed.   Sign up for my newsletter and get a year of stories, completely free. CLICK HERE to get started. “got the muse in my head, she’s universal”

Hard to believe it’s been 20 years since Placebo released their first album but it is. I remember them appearing in one of the UK weekly music newspapers (NME maybe) and according to the interviewer, the record company was concerned they were taking off too quickly. Probably just hype but they certainly had an impact – great lyrics, catchy tunes and a lead singer who didn’t conform to the normal rock and roll stereotypes made them a huge hit. I was lucky enough to see them at Rock City in Nottingham and it was a great gig. Nancy Boy is one of my favourite tracks from that first album.   In 2003 they released a bonus disc with a couple of their albums featuring a bunch of cover songs, including this excellent version of Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill.   Placebo are still going strong and are going on a 20th anniversary world tour this year. No idea if they’re coming to Vancouver yet, but if they are, I’ll be there. Assuming I can get tickets. And they aren’t too expensive Sign up for my newsletter and get a year of stories, completely free. CLICK HERE to get started. [“got the muse in my head she’s universal” by Philip … Read More

I haven’t posted any music on a Wednesday for a while so here’s one of my favourite bands playing a song that seems particularly apt today. “A man of words is a man of lies”

My wife and I got to see David Duchovny sing on Saturday. Yes, that David Duchovny. It was a fun evening, and Duchovny was even joined on-stage by another X-Files alumnus – Nicholas Lea who played Alex Krycek – and the two of them performed Knockin on Heaven’s Door. That means we’ve now seen Mulder, Scully, Cigarette Smoking Man and Krycek in person. I wonder what Mitch Pileggi is up to these days. To celebrate, here’s the video for the title track from Duchovny’s debut album, Hell or Highwater. “Wherever there is danger he’ll be there”

A few weeks ago, Netflix Canada added the 80s TV show, Danger Mouse, to its line up. My wife and I watched the first episode and it was as fun as I remembered. Like all the best kid’s TV it has humour that works for kids and adults alike. Danger Mouse will be returning to British screens later this year and CBBC recently released a teaser trailer…   Good to see they haven’t changed the theme music and given that DM’s eye patch will now be an gadget laden “i-patch” it seems they haven’t lost the sense of humour either. Time will tell, I guess. Hopefully they’ll follow this up with a remake of the spinoff series – Count Duckula. For a limited time, I’m giving everyone who signs up to my mailing list 5 free books, including a copy of my science fiction novel, Glitch Mitchell and the Unseen Planet when it’s released later this year. Click here to sign up and get your free books. “Game is over, I’m full of regrets”

Appearances can be deceptive…   That was Take My Chance by DOLL$BOXX. These could be the lyrics: If there’s no love, I’ll wait Even when I’m angry and betrayed, I still haven’t given up completely, right? ONE CHANCE I’ll stretch it and take a risk I can’t let it end like this The last advantage The false hand of fate doesn’t enter in Game is over, I’m full of regrets GET UP one more time YOU SHOULD NOT DENOUNCE ME AS IMPOSTOR IF YOU CAN’T FIND OUT Stupidly dreaming Like chance, like fortune (Could it come true?) It can’t be that easy…(can it?) If there’s (I’m clinging to the numbers I can see) (If I’m crying, not thinking how things will go wrong…) No love (Until the end) I’ll wait Even when I’m angry and betrayed, I still haven’t given up completely, right? ONE CHANCE I’ll stretch it and take a risk I can’t let it end like this Just focusing a little, You won’t necessarily succeed Being unprepared– MISS IT!! A force boldly breaking free One more time DO YOU THINK THAT YOU WANT TO BEAT UP ON ME SO LOUD LOUD LOUD The times when I dream, I look … Read More

“Monsters walking cross the floor”

It’s Canada Day here in a very hot and sunny Vancouver so I thought I’d commemorate the occasion with a Canadian artist for music Wednesdays – Feist. 1 2 3 4 is one of my favourite songs of hers and probably her most well known. Here’s a couple of versions, first the original   And this is the version she sang on Sesame Street.   The song is taken from the album The Reminder. 5 Things I’ve Done Since I Last Posted on My Blog

Philip HarrisChatter, WritingLeave a Comment

It’s been a while since I last posted here, over a month in fact. I’ve been very busy during that time, but here’s a few highlights to get me back on the blogging horse… 1 – Wrapped up Siren’s Call At least, I’ve wrapped up the fourth draft which is the last draft before I send it off to Ellen Campbell, the editor who’ll be whipping it into shape. I’m really happy with how the book turned out. It was great fun to write and feedback from the people who’ve read it so far has been excellent. I can’t confirm the release date just yet but you shouldn’t have too long to wait. 2 – Saw Kieran Strange and The Doubleclicks Perform Live Neither of us were familiar with Kieran Strange but we enjoyed her show. Anyone with a song called Merry Undead Christmas must be good. This was the first time we’d seen The Doubleclicks live and they were predictably awesome. Their brief rendition of the Doctor Who theme was worth the price of admission on its own. 3 – Watched Mad Max: Fury Road If I get some time, I’ll post my thoughts on the film but suffice to say, I loved it. So much that I’m tempted … Read More

“a mouth like Texas and that ain’t small”

The Jesus and Mary Chain are playing Vancouver tonight (to celebrate the 30th anniversary of their album, Psychocandy) and we’ve got tickets so this week’s musical interlude was an easy choice. A lot of the band’s tracks are distortion heavy (especially the tracks on Psychocandy) and are a bit of an acquired taste but this is Blues From a Gun.   And one of my favourite tracks, the b-side New York City.   Blues From a Gun is from the 1989 album, Automatic.   If you’re feeling really brave, this is You Trip Me Up from Psychocandy. If you’re interested in hearing more of The Jesus and Mary Chain, I recommend starting with the 1992 album, Honey’s Dead.
